Bryant Furnace Light Blinking? The Two-Digit Code, Decoded
Bryant furnaces blink in two digits: short flashes are the first digit, long flashes are the second. Short-short-short then one long = 3 and 1 = code 31. Watch the pattern repeat two or three times to be sure of your count. (Bryant and Carrier are the same equipment family, so if you've read a Carrier code chart, you already speak Bryant.)
Safety first, every page: smell gas, skip all of this — leave the house and call your gas company from outside.
Two rules before resetting anything
- Write down the code and your model number (sticker inside the upper compartment). Power-cycling erases the code, and the code is the clue.
- The legend on the inside of your blower door is the authority for your exact model. Below are the common ones.
Common Bryant codes
- Steady or rapid flashing with no count — on many models, normal operation. Check the legend before assuming trouble.
- 13 — limit lockout: repeated overheating. Check the filter and vents, then one power cycle.
- 31 — pressure or venting fault: it can't prove the exhaust is moving. On high-efficiency models, check the white PVC pipes outside for snow, ice, leaves, or nests. Free fix when that's the cause.
- 33 — limit switch tripped: overheating right now. A clogged filter is the usual suspect — hold it to a light.
- 34 — ignition failure: tried to light, couldn't prove flame. Commonly a dirty flame sensor; a modest repair.
- 14 — ignition lockout after repeated 34s. A power cycle buys one more try; the underlying cause still needs fixing.
The order of operations
Free checks first: filter, open vents, clear outdoor pipes. One reset: power switch off 30 seconds, on. If the code returns, stop resetting and call — leading with "Bryant, code 33, model number..." That sentence gets you a better-prepared tech and a straighter quote.
