Furnace Humming But Not Starting? Here's the Suspect List

A hum is actually useful news: power is reaching the furnace, and something is trying. The question is what's trying and failing — and the answer is usually one of three motors-and-helpers.

Safety first, every page: smell gas, leave the house, call your gas company from outside. A hum plus a burning-electrical smell: shut the furnace off at its switch and make it a prompt call.

The most common: a dead capacitor

Motors need a capacitor — think of it as the starting shove. When it fails, the motor hums (it's energized) but can't start spinning. This is one of the most common furnace failures, and one of the cheaper fixes.

A classic (careful) test a tech does: with the panel off, a gentle push on the blower wheel with a stick makes the motor take off and run — proof the capacitor, not the motor, is dead. Mentioning "hums, and the blower spins up if nudged" to a dispatcher practically diagnoses it over the phone.

The inducer motor: the first thing that should run

When the thermostat calls for heat, the FIRST mover is the small inducer fan (it clears the vent before ignition). If the hum is coming from that small motor and nothing progresses — no clicks, no flames, no blower — a stuck or seized inducer is likely. Sometimes it's debris; often it's a worn motor. Either way the furnace won't go further until it spins, because a safety switch is waiting for proof of airflow.

The blower motor itself

If the furnace lights, runs briefly, then shuts down with a hum from the big motor and no air from the vents — the blower isn't moving air, the furnace overheats, and safeties kill it. Same capacitor story applies, or the motor itself is at end of life.

What's yours to do

Not much inside the cabinet — these are live-electricity parts. But you can: note WHERE the hum comes from (small motor up top vs. big blower below), whether anything else happens (clicks? flames? air?), check the filter (a strangled blower overheats faster), and power-cycle once. Then call with the story. "Hums from the inducer, no clicks, model number is…" is a beautiful sentence to a dispatcher.
