Furnace Smells Musty When It Runs? Finding the Source
Musty means moisture — somewhere in the system, damp met dust and got comfortable. It's rarely dangerous the way gas or electrical smells are, but it's your house telling you where water is sitting. Worth finding.
Safety first, every page: this page is for MUSTY — old socks, wet basement, mildew. Rotten eggs is gas: leave and call your gas company from outside. Burning smells have their own page.
The four usual sources
- The filter. A filter that got damp — humid basement, nearby condensation — grows exactly that smell, and then the system distributes it house-wide. Cheapest possible fix: replace it and see if the smell follows.
- The AC coil above the furnace. Your furnace shares its airbox with the AC's indoor coil, which spends all summer wet. Dust on a damp coil in a dark box is a mildew farm, and the first weeks of heating season blow the evidence through the house. A coil cleaning is a routine maintenance-visit item.
- The condensate pan and drain. Standing water under the coil — from a slow or clogged drain — keeps the whole cabinet humid. Look for water in or around the pan; a drain clear is quick and cheap.
- The ducts themselves. If the smell is strongest at one or two vents (sniff them — genuinely), moisture may be getting into that duct run through a crawlspace or slab. Localized smell = localized problem, and that's a duct inspection.
The pattern tells you which
Smell everywhere, worse when the system first kicks on, fading as it runs → filter or coil. Smell constant near the furnace itself → pan and drain. Smell at specific vents only → that duct run.
When it's a mold question
Musty that persists after a new filter, a coil cleaning, and a dry pan — or any visible growth on vents or in the cabinet — moves this from maintenance to indoor-air-quality territory. That's still fixable; it's just a different visit.
