Honeywell Thermostat Flashing \"Cool On\" or \"Heat On\"? Here's Why

On most Honeywell thermostats, a flashing "Cool On" or "Heat On" means: I heard you, I'm waiting on purpose. It's a built-in delay — usually five minutes — that protects your system's compressor from rapid restarts, the kind that happen after a power blip or someone toggling settings.

So the first fix is the hardest one: wait ten minutes and do nothing. When the words stop flashing and go solid, the system is being told to run.

Safety first, every page: smell gas, leave the house, call your gas company from outside.

Flashing for more than 10 minutes?

Now it's worth checking things, in this order:

  1. Batteries. Weak batteries make Honeywells behave strangely even with figures still on the screen. Fresh ones first.
  2. The furnace's power. The thermostat can ask forever; if the furnace has no power, nobody answers. Check the light-switch-looking switch on or near the furnace, and the breaker labeled furnace or air handler.
  3. The furnace door. A front panel that isn't seated flat presses a safety switch that cuts everything. Push it firmly closed.
  4. The float switch (AC and high-efficiency furnaces). A backed-up condensate drain trips a safety that stops the system while the thermostat keeps flashing hopefully. Look for standing water around the indoor unit's drain pan.

Solid words but nothing running?

If "Heat On" is solid and steady and the equipment still isn't doing anything after a few minutes, the problem has moved past the thermostat — that's equipment territory: ignition, board, or blower.

After a power outage

Flashing right after an outage is the delay doing exactly its job. Some models flash "Wait" instead — same story, same cure: patience.
