Ice on Your AC Line? Do These 2 Things Right Now

Ice on an air conditioner in the middle of summer looks impossible, but it's one of the most common AC failures there is. It's also one of the few where what you do in the next five minutes genuinely matters.

Standing rule, every page: if you ever smell gas — rotten eggs — leave the house and call your gas company from outside. That outranks everything below.

First: stop cooling, keep the fan

Do these two things now:

1. Switch the thermostat mode to OFF (or from COOL to just fan). Running a frozen system can slug the compressor with liquid — that's the repair that totals an AC.
2. Set the fan to ON. Warm indoor air moving across the ice melts it much faster than letting it sit.

Now give it time. A light frost clears in an hour or two; a solid block of ice can take several hours or overnight. Put a towel under the indoor unit — all that ice becomes water, and the drain may not catch every drop.

Why it froze

Ice means the coil got colder than it should. Three causes account for almost every case:

1. Starved airflow. The coil needs warm air constantly flowing over it to stay above freezing. A clogged filter, blocked return grille, or too many closed vents starves it. This is the cause you can fix yourself — check the filter first, every time.

2. Low refrigerant. Less refrigerant means lower pressure, and lower pressure means a colder coil. Refrigerant doesn't get "used up" — if it's low, it leaked, and it will freeze again after every thaw until the leak is found and fixed. That's a technician with a gauge set.

3. A weak blower. If the indoor fan is failing or running slow, the coil starves for air even with a clean filter. Also a pro diagnosis.

After the thaw: the one honest test

Once the ice is fully gone, replace the filter, open every vent, and run the system normally.

• Stays ice-free and cools well? Airflow was your problem, and you fixed it for the cost of a filter.
• Freezes again with a clean filter? Stop thawing and re-running — that's a refrigerant or blower problem, and every re-freeze is another gamble with the compressor. Time to call.
